| Shoddy construction Thu, 14 Aug 2008 12:12:21 -0500 MIKE SATTERLEE CEDAR FALLS --- I would like to know why thousands of dollars were allocated to the Parkersburg cleanup and yet not a dime to hire the badly needed building inspectors. The rebuilding, as it continues requires inspections on the tornado/flood damaged homes yet currently, there are no inspections. As a contractor in another field and know some of the code, I am seeing some pretty shoddy construction practices and codes being violated. These contractors are not being forced to comply with the current codes and are getting by with poor construction practices by cutting corners and not engaging in the installation of proper lateral bracing or hurricane strapping just to mention a few. It is sad to see that homeowners have already faced a nasty situation and now are facing poor quality in the construction/rebuilding of their homes. It is also sad that these out-of-town contractors do not take the time to find out what our codes are and respect the homeowers by following these codes. I guess I have to ask why this is allowed to happen? |

| Thompson for sheriff Thu, 14 Aug 2008 12:12:21 -0500 WAYNE L. PETERSON ELK RUN HEIGHTS --- I would like to tell you why I'm voting for Tony Thompson for sheriff of Black Hawk County. I was at an event where I got to meet and listen to Tony Thompson. This man has all of the right ideas. At our event there were quite a few young people there. These kids joined in on the visiting and asked questions of Tony. They were really enjoying the conversations and kept asking questions. I couldn't believe how Tony was so patient and so willing to try and answer every question asked. The kids loved him. I feel it is so important to have this kind of leadership. Please check this guy out. I'm sure you will see what I have and know that he is the right man for our Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office. Mike Kubik is retiring and we need to have someone fill his shoes. Tony Thompson is the man for this job. Vote Tony Thompson as the next sheriff for Black Hawk County. |
