| Animals source of salmonella Sun, 10 Aug 2008 06:27:54 -0500 WYATT CONRAD WATERLOO --- The Food and Drug Administration's hunt for sources of the recent salmonella outbreak reminds me of the antics of the comical Inspector Clusoe of Pink Panther fame. First, they traced it to tomatoes, inflicting $250 million in frivolous damages on that harmless industry. Then it was the jalapeno peppers. Now it's the serrano peppers. In prior years, they blamed lettuce and spinach. Yet, most students of biology 101 know that salmonella enteritidis is an intestinal organism, and most produce are just not endowed with intestines. |

| Obama will help students Sun, 10 Aug 2008 06:27:54 -0500 WHEATON SCHROEDER CEDAR FALLS --- College tuitions and the price of living are on the rise all over America, and it hits college students particularly hard. | Show some respect Sun, 10 Aug 2008 06:27:54 -0500 CAROL ROBINSON WATERLOO --- Yesterday was First Friday, the Republican Womens Luncheon that features informative speakers. One of the people who spoke, among others, was Leon Mosley. During his talk Mr. Mosley said something that was profound and touching. He said that children should respect their mothers. This statement stood out because of the sadness that it needed to be said. Not only that, but Mr. Mosley said they should be respected because they carried us for nine months. Again this struck home, because with three million abortions there are a lot of women who have refused this part of motherhood. Certainly the ones who didn't should be respected. Also, what does a little more respect in the world hurt? Maybe everybody could use an ounce or so of respect. As far as children go --- if they work on respect maybe some day they will reach honor, and that would be a real blessing. |

| Appearances shouldn't matter Sun, 10 Aug 2008 06:27:54 -0500 DUSTY OLDANI CEDAR FALLS --- You may remember my first letter here about a month ago on the unfairness I've faced looking for work here in the Cedar Valley due to my body modifications. In the first letter I was attempting to be polite. No more Mr. Nice Guy. I'm fed up being constantly discriminated against because of either my arm tattoos or the fact that my earlobes are stretched. Come on people. The 1950s are long over. This is the 21st Century. I'm sick to death of the "baby boomer" generation always turning down good, decent hard-working people like myself, who want to work, just because we aren't the clean cut "Johnny Be Goode" type that employers always seem to want. I'm experienced in automotive, warehouse, shipping/receiving and many other areas, but whenever I go to apply and even get lucky enough for a call back, it's always the same. They like my qualifications. I'll ask if my appearance would be an issue and either they say, "No, not as long as you show up to do your job and we'll call you," (which they never do) or they say my tattoos aren't a problem but my ear jewelry must go. My stretched earlobes pose no safety/health risks and never fall out. |
| Taking away our rights Sun, 10 Aug 2008 06:27:54 -0500 GREG HARGREAVES WATERLOO --- What Shirley Roof (Aug. 6) and many liberals don't understand is the very dear price we Americans have paid for our freedom. Our rights, the freedoms we all enjoy, have been purchased with the blood of American soldiers on battlefields here and abroad. |

His plan addresses many of the obstacles facing working women, from increasing the minimum wage to expanding the earned income tax credit to providing after-school and summer programs for children as well as affordable health care. |
| A campaign piece for McCain Sun, 10 Aug 2008 06:27:54 -0500 SCOTT O'BRIEN GENEVA --- You would think that the business editor for the Courier could use the valuable space he was provided in the opinion section more effectively by producing some facts and statistics to support the position he was taking. Instead he chose to write what amounts to a McCain campaign piece. |
| Remember facts when voting Sun, 10 Aug 2008 06:27:54 -0500 HANNAH MILLETT WATERLOO --- Foreign policy has been a hot topic when it comes to the 2008 presidential election. There are several things to keep in mind when deciding who has the most beneficial foreign policy. John McCain started running a negative ad in Iowa accusing Obama of little experience in Afghanistan and Iraq. The timing is quizzical as at the same time McCain is finally following Obama's lead, saying we need an increased emphasis on the war in Afghanistan. While this is a new stance for McCain, Barack Obama has been calling for this emphasis since his beginning days campaigning in Iowa. Americans know that our domestic policy and our foreign policy are linked --- especially when it comes to solving the energy crisis--- and they know that we need fundamental change on both fronts. Sen. Obama is going to set a fundamentally different course for this country, abroad and at home. By contrast, John McCain's priority is continuing George Bush's war in Iraq indefinitely --- at the expense of our efforts in Afghanistan. And as he tried to turn his attention to Afghanistan on Tuesday --- a conflict he once said we "may muddle through"--- it became painfully clear that he has no plan to win the war there, offering no less than three different explanations for how we would increase our troop presence in a matter of hours. Remember these facts when choosing who will be our next president. |
