Unfair to flood victims Sun, 3 Aug 2008 06:24:57 -0500 BETTIE D. ANTON MARION --- I have spoken with so many of the flood victims who are broken-hearted from losing so many treasured items, but they are so brave about it all. The worst part about it is, the unjust and criminal tactics their insurance companies are pulling on them. I am all too familiar with these situations, so decided to do some research. I was astonished as to my findings. The commissioner of insurance has done nothing to stop any of their bad faith dealings. I clicked on to FDIC (Fight Bad-Faith Insurance Companies) www.badfaithinsurance.org. FDIC data, which confirms the mass denials and nonpayment of claims, by many insurers, is both a common and routine practice. It is widespread and out of control throughout the United States and nothing is being done about it
Iowa should switch to 43 feet Sun, 3 Aug 2008 06:24:57 -0500 BRENDAN DILLON WATERLOO --- I have coached a high school varsity softball team in Massachusetts for the past six years so I found your editorial on making the switch to the 43-foot distance quite interesting. This past year was the first year the pitching rubber was moved to 43 feet in Massachusetts. It was introduced with little fanfare. As coaches, we certainly were concerned with the effect this change could have on the game. Would the elite pitchers be unhittable with their drops dropping and their rises rising earlier? Would the not so elite pitchers become "pitching machines" for hitters who now had extra time to really see the ball? Well, it became a non-issue as the season progressed. The girls, as young people are wont to do, adjusted to the change quickly. Early in the season the game scores were a little higher than usual, but by midseason the norm prevailed. I do believe that, psychologically, it gave the hitters more confidence in their ability to hit elite pitching now that they had a little longer time to react. This did not necessarily translate into more hits. From a safety perspective, pitchers, who are the closest to the batter (generally), are given a little extra time to react to hit balls and that is certainly a good thing. After this year's experience in Massachusetts, I would say to Iowa --- go for it.

Dems keep on taxing Sun, 3 Aug 2008 06:24:57 -0500 CRAIG SHORT DYSART --- I recently read that California is banning transfats. When is copycat Chet (Iowa Gov. Chet Culver) going to do that? He did that with cigarettes, and he wants to raise the taxes on gas. Are we losing too many taxes from all the cigarette taxes to other states? What casino is he in bed with tonight? Just curious what happened to the surplus we had when Culver came to office. Hope the Democrats are gone very soon, or we are going to be paying more taxes than we make in wages. Also, when they take one freedom, how many more are they going for? Semper Fi!
McCain follows Rove's example Sun, 3 Aug 2008 06:24:57 -0500 BRAD JENSEN CEDAR FALLS --- John McCain reminds me of the little boy who misbehaves in school because he would rather have negative attention than no attention. His latest ads, blaming Barack Obama for high gas prices and comparing him to Paris Hilton and Britney Spears, is more Karl Rove-style politics. If using lies and innuendo to persuade us to vote against Barack Obama is the best the Republicans can do, they have no chance to win in November. As George W. Bush once said, " ... fool me once, shame on --- shame on you. Fool me --- you can't get fooled again."
