| Different kind of Olympics Fri, 1 Aug 2008 12:02:13 -0500 JULIE FISCHER CEDAR FALLS --- I can get excited about The Olympics, seeing athletes in peak condition, competing for top rank among peers. Winners take their place in history and earn lots of money. It's the triumph of one person against many odds. Contemplating this brought me a "what if" moment. What IF we staged a "Human Survival Olympics" every year? Don't Americans often tout competition as the key to our national success? Don't we love to be No.1? Imagine the survival events: 1) most efficient, carbon-sparing public transit system; most fuel efficient, non-polluting vehicles sold; best city planning for walkable, bikable access; greatest electricity output from renewable sources; most jobs created in sustainable sectors; largest restored wetland and cleanest rivers; best country-wide waste reduction and recycling; most organic crops raised and biomass composted; the least investment in machineries of war (Ooops! I guess we'd come in dead last in that event.) The gold medal pioneers would win the mandate to teach other countries how to transform to carbon neutral alternatives. Al Gore says we have 10 years to change to a sustainable future. Shall we lead or be dragged? |

First off, there have been more than a few media complaints about Mr. Obama acting as if he's already president and then for Mr. Anthony, who represented the Republican Party not too long ago, to anoint him as such is surprising. |
