| Use taxes to fix sidewalks Sun, 20 Jul 2008 06:22:05 -0500 leslie a. streittmatter WATERLOO --- Wake up Waterloo and solve the problem once and for all. Public sidewalks are like public streets, they are not for the exclusive use of the homeowners, but for the benefit of the public. Public sidewalks, like public streets, should be paid for by the 1-cent sales tax. If 1 cent is not enough raise the tax to 3 cents. It is time to be fair to all the citizens of Waterloo. It is time to leave behind the outhouse and corn cobs an be accommodating to all. It don't know what federal repercussion there would be if the city vacated streets and thus eliminated handicap sidewalks. There could be a one-time fee for those who have no public sidewalks now. All additions and sidewalk improvements would then be paid for by the public (sales tax). |
| Thompson the right choice Sun, 20 Jul 2008 06:22:05 -0500 DAVID CUMMINGS EVANSDALE --- As a combat vet, I find it easy to select my next sheriff of Black Hawk County. My vote is based on commitment to an ideal of service --- not just serving the public, but giving selflessly of your time, your energy and your efforts. I feel strongly that public service is about selflessly committing yourself to an ideal that is bigger and greater than the sum of all that you are, and all that you will ever be. I see the commitment to service in the words and in the deeds of Tony Thompson. He too is a combat veteran, having served in Panama, the first Gulf War, and Bosnia. He now trains and teaches other soldiers how to lead men and women into combat at the Iowa Military Academy, having seen and experienced it himself. He trains others to selflessly charge into harm's way on the Sheriff's Office SWAT team. He educates children on the dangers of drugs. He works the streets of our county arresting illegal drug users and dealers, people who otherwise threaten our safety and security. He willingly lays his own life on the line for safety of others. There is no greater gift or focus that a public servant can bring to this election, and I am greatly appreciative of his efforts. He brings this focus in all facets of his life. I for one am convinced that there is no other reasonable choice for the next sheriff of Black Hawk County other than Tony Thompson. |

And Democrats have been in charge of the House and Senate for just under two years! I can hardly wait to see what other changes they have in mind. |

| Vote for Mokricky Sun, 20 Jul 2008 06:22:06 -0500 RAY JORGENSEN WATERLOO --- Ryan Ball recently wrote a letter to the editor talking abut Rep. Also, let's not forget that while she was in Des Moines, Rep. Kelley and the Democrats raised fees and taxes on hard-working Iowans to pay for their pet projects and out-of-control spending. |

Please see this report and write to the paper, and if you would, let me know at eagleswingstherapy@gmail. |
