Thanks for smoking ban Fri, 11 Jul 2008 12:02:40 -0500 ALICE BARUTH WATERLOO --- I want to thank our legislators and governor for passage of the Smoke Free Air Act. They are getting the blame, so they get the thank you! The grassroots health activists have been working on this issue for 15 years! Blame Gov. Culver; he is just the one with the pen. Look into what has happened in other states. California for instance. They have not fallen into the ocean because a few radicals attempted to protect their health. There is tons of research out there that shows no long-term economic deprivation to business. Tobacco use is forced on people, it may be a choice for the first few times, but after that it is an addiction. You become addicted; your body (read brain) needs that drug. Quitting is not easy, I know, I did it. Smoke if you have to, but your "right" ends where my airspace is violated.

Vote for Doris Kelley Fri, 11 Jul 2008 12:02:40 -0500 LOIS CROWLEY CEDAR FALLS --- Doris Kelley has kept the promise she extended to the Cedar Valley voters two years ago when she was elected as our Iowa House District 20 Representative. I am very proud of her ability to truly represent the voters of Waterloo, Cedar Falls and Hudson --- our citizens' needs come first in her book as she genuinely is a representative of the people, by the people, and for the people. It is rare for a freshman legislator to earn the respect of both parties, serve on key legislative committees, and be put in a leadership position to chair several debates on the floor. Her proactive ability to work "across the aisle" with members of the minority party is heartening to watch. We've got a winner in Doris Kelley and we need to return her to the capitol to continue representing our collective interests. Mark your Tuesday, Nov. 4, calendar as a time when we must re-elect Doris Kelley, identified as one of Iowa's top representatives and influential legislators. For Cedar Valley's continued future, vote for Doris Kelley.
Looks shouldn't matter Fri, 11 Jul 2008 12:02:40 -0500 DUSTIN OLDANI CEDAR FALLS --- I am looking for a job, almost anything will do. I'm a 35-year-old male who has lived in Cedar Falls my whole life. I am very punctual, honest and trustworthy. I also have numerous years experience in working in warehouses and general customer service. But for some reason I just can't find a job. Why, you may ask? Am I a felon, do I ask too much from employers, do I not speak English or do I smell bad? Actually it's the fact that I've done some things to my body that people have been doing for centuries. I have tattoos on my arms and my ear lobes are stretched. Now the last time I looked, those things are on the outside of my body and have no link to my work ethic. Apparently employers think that I am a "troublemaker" and refuse to hire me just based on my appearance. I personally find this unfair and hope that you do as well.
