Government is the problem Sun, 29 Jun 2008 06:37:02 -0500 STEVEN SINDELAR FORT ATKINSON --- Two bridges east of Fort Atkinson were damaged by the flood. One was a railroad bridge, the other one was a bridge on Hwy. 24. The railroad bridge was severely damaged. At least 60 feet of the railroad tracks were just hanging over open water. The railroad had a crew and equipment in the next day (Monday). By Friday morning they had trains going over the repaired bridge. The Hwy. 24 bridge did not get harmed, but the approach on one end of the bridge was washed out, leaving a hole of about 20 feet. The DOT has told the people of Fort Atkinson it could take up to six months to fill this hole and pour 20 feet of cement. It they hired a crew like the railroad we would have been driving over it in less than a week. Reagan was right. "Government can't fix your problem, government is the problem." A government that can't fix a 20 foot hole in less than six months wants to take over our health care.
Local contractors stepped up Sun, 29 Jun 2008 06:37:02 -0500 JANET SCHUPBACH CEDAR FALLS --- I am a strong believer of supporting local businesses whenever possible. One reason for this was evidenced during the television coverage of the Floods of 2008. In the background of the video coverage you saw local contractors hauling sand. Those two contractors were Peterson Contractors out of Reinbeck and Aspro out of Waterloo. These are just two examples of where our local businesses stepped in to help our cities and towns in desperate times. What I hope is that the leaders of these cities and towns remember how our local businesses were there to help when needed. When it comes time for cities and towns to let contracts where they are paying for services it shouldn't always be the lowest cost contractor who is selected. There should be other criteria. A tie to the community should count for something.

Tony Thompson for sheriff Sun, 29 Jun 2008 06:37:02 -0500 juanita hockey WATERLOO --- I am writing this letter to the editor to tell everyone what they should already know --- Tony Thompson is one heck of a leader and a gentleman of our community. I have heard him speak to various groups and I have listened personally to his ideas about taking over as the next sheriff of Black Hawk County. He wants to reinstitute the inmate worker program and use these folks to clean up ditches and county parks. I think this is a wonderful idea. He wants to train junior officers to aid in getting more deputies on the streets. I think we need that. And finally, he wants to focus the sheriff's office attention of drug-related crimes, and I know that this is a step in the right direction.
A middle class nightmare Sun, 29 Jun 2008 06:37:02 -0500 TERESA MEYER WAVERLY --- The Bush Administration is a runaway train straight to hell sending American labor and American middle class down with it. The Iraq War, the $70 billion tax cut for the rich and the trade deficit, the first two voted in before the Democrats came to office and the trade deficit which has been ongoing for years. These three things will be a middle class tax nightmare. Work until you're dead, dig the hole and push me in. The Bush Administration supports white collar criminals to destroy American labor by using intimidation and coercion, not allowing Americans to organize and engage in collective bargaining. White collar criminals are sending their businesses overseas where they pay workers squat and feed them shoe soup, or bring in illegals and H-1B workers who are not skilled labor to replace American labor. In return they flatten our wages, delete benefits, produce a rotten toxic product and the white collar criminals are laughing all the way to the bank. The solution to these problems would be electing labor's No. 1 choice, Bruce Braley. The original co-sponsor for the most important bill I have seen in decades, "The Employee Free Choice Act." Go to his Web http://braley.house.gov. He has always been a strong advocate for labor and the middle class and he has the voting record to prove it.
