ROBERTS SIDNEY — As a long-time hockey fan who watched greats like Gordie Howe and Terry Sawchuck (at 17 years old) play their rookie seasons with the Omaha Knights, I want to tell all of you what a fantastic series your Black Hawks provided. From my seat at the Mid-America Center, the Omaha Lancers and the Waterloo Black Hawks played the finest, most exciting hockey there could be. And while their ear-splitting bells hurt my ears, your fans were the best we encountered. You are fortunate to be getting so many players back next year. But I’m not sure I should say good luck! |
| Hold owners accountable Tue, 10 Jun 2008 12:00:59 -0500 Bike safety concern JANET GALLAGHER WATERLOO --- I saw a really scary thing on the southern part of Prospect Boulevard last week. A child riding his bike to school heading right for me. He had obviously had some kind of safety training since he was wearing his helmet, but no one had taught him to ride his bike on the right side of the road. I've seen this sort of thing before, generally riders without helmets on the narrow blacktops of Donald or Idaho or in the heavy traffic of University Avenue. This is just plain dangerous. Bicyclists are supposed to be riding with the vehicle traffic. They are supposed to be over to the right of the lane, but not so far over as to put themselves in danger from parked cars, curbs or falling on the shoulder. They are supposed to honor traffic signals and supposed to signal their turns. We, in the cars, are supposed to give them the full right to be there. If we need to pass them, we are supposed to wait until we can give them the full lane. When a bicyclist rides towards oncoming traffic there is no way for the cars to pass by them without either forcing them to the far side of the road or changing our own lane. We are forced to pass them without being able to safely choose the time and place. That's why it's illegal to ride a bike against traffic. |
