Insider picture inappropriate Tue, 3 Jun 2008 12:16:03 -0500 JOAN KRIZ WATERLOO --- In the "Insider" was a large picture of a West High student at graduation with a large cigar in his mouth. I was at the graduation --- over 400 graduates --- and there were many other moments of the evening than a student with a cigar. This was a very inappropriate picture.
Raid was not un-American Tue, 3 Jun 2008 12:16:04 -0500 HARI SHANKAR CEDAR FALLS --- I am saddened, reading the letter of my friend Kamyar Enshayan, about immigration raid. It is unfortunate to have such a letter, from a highly educated person. I do agree with his criticism for illegal activities of our Federal government, some corporations, and relaxed enforcement of the law which regulates food and drug industries. Neither "English-only" is a bad idea; nor it is racist, as Kamyar states. His remark for people who came to America after 1492 is inappropriate. ICE raid was not inhumane either. Nor, was it un-American or anti-Iowa. Raid was to curve illegal activities, done knowingly, by both, employers and employees. And they should be penalized appropriately. It is interesting to note, Enshayan critics the illegal operations, but also supports illegal activities.
Hageman for District 19 Tue, 3 Jun 2008 12:16:04 -0500 CRAIG and DEBORAH GINGRICH CEDAR FALLS --- To have a candidate like Dr. Carlin Hageman on the ballot to run for District 19 Iowa House is a positive development. He is a man of character and integrity that has been at the forefront of his field. He stands for traditional Iowa values and has served his country in the military, as well. He is a solid citizen and has been instrumental in making UNI's Speech Pathology Department one of America's best. He has been an exemplary educator and he will be an excellent legislator for our area.
An apology for letter Tue, 3 Jun 2008 12:16:04 -0500 KAMYAR ENSHAYAN CEDAR FALLS --- My letter to the editor regarding the raid was not meant to be offensive or divisive. Though I can see why some people were offended by it. I am sorry that the way I expressed myself bothered some people. I wrote to raise questions about the way we think about this issue. I am not in favor of illegal immigration.
Don't count your chickens Tue, 3 Jun 2008 12:16:04 -0500 BRUCE G. ROGERS CEDAR FALLS --- On May 30 a "Letter to the Editor" stated, "I know of people who have already ordered items they intend to pay for with their economic stimulus payment. They will be very disappointed when they find out that the government did not tell us all of the details of the payment?" In about 570 BC, Aesop addressed this issue in his fable titled, "The Milkmaid and her Pail." No doubt, all of us are familiar with the well-known proverb from this tale. However, in case some readers do not understand the wording of that famous saying, a more recent writer (whose name is unknown to me) restated it in current language, as follows: Refrain from the calculation of juvenile poultry prior to the entire process of incubation. Both in olden times and today, that is good advice for each of us to heed if we want to avoid being "disappointed" in future events.
Jimmy Carter is a patriot Tue, 3 Jun 2008 12:16:05 -0500 MERLE F. THOMPSON CEDAR FALLS --- If Jimmy Carter makes Diana West (Washington Post columnist) ill, our Constitution and the gospel must maker her throw up. Our (liberal) Constitution gives her the freedom to spread her vitriol. Under the gospel, the Lord blesses the peacemakers, not war mongers.
GOP official is not neutral Tue, 3 Jun 2008 12:16:06 -0500 WILLIAM McDERMOTT CEDAR FALLS --- Gregory Tagtow's election as vice chairman of the county GOP, an elite position of leadership, is why I wrote that Tagtow is no longer "an average voice in the community." Because of his election to that "office," Tagtow has become a spokesman for his political party. Every time he writes a letter to the editor he is speaking for the GOP. I do not understand why Tagtow wants to run away from his title as vice chairman.
ICE should focus on employers, too Tue, 3 Jun 2008 12:16:03 -0500 It's no secret that when immigration operations such as the May 12 raid in Postville occur, illegal workers take the arrests, while employers are generally left alone.
