We can't pull out now Sun, 1 Jun 2008 06:20:20 -0500 ALEX HANSEN INDEPENDENCE --- As a country we have been in Iraq since March 20, 2003, and now, more than five years later, all anyone is talking about is whether or not to pull out. Don't get me wrong, I don't agree with the Iraq War in the least, but we are there, and we need to stay there until we repair the damage we have caused. Instead, all the American people want to do is give up, and leave the country to chaos. It didn't solve anything in Vietnam and it won't solve anything in Iraq. Of course, one of the main platform hooks of the Democratic candidates is pulling our troops out of Iraq. What would be the result of this? Iraq, and most likely, the rest of the Middle East would fall into chaos, oil prices would soar, and our influence in international affairs would suffer a damaging blow. We are already seen as a bully by the international community, do you want to prove them right?
Tony Thompson for sheriff Sun, 1 Jun 2008 06:20:20 -0500 GENE LIND WATERLOO --- I want to write a quick letter to tell everyone why I am so excited that Tony Thompson is going to be the next sheriff of Black Hawk County. Anyone who has ever met this gentleman knows what a charismatic and genuine person he is. His approachability makes him an ideal candidate to take over for retiring Sheriff Mike Kubik. He is intelligent and has taught college at UNI. He understands this county's rural issues, and has taught in our rural schools. He recognizes the dangers of illegal drugs and has taken it upon himself to make a personal impact on this crime as well. He also knows the importance of public education and public awareness to prevent crime, and is the only officer that I'm aware of, out there working with the citizens in crime prevention education. I truly feel that he is the best qualified and the best prepared to be the "leader" of our Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office. I know that he possesses the knowledge and look forward to his "down to earth approach" at connecting with the public on issues and resolutions. Take the time and look at Tony's Web site www.thompsonforsheriff.net You can also e-mail Tony with any question you may have at tony@thompsonforsheriff.net. Please join me at the polls and vote for Tony Thompson for our next Black Hawk County sheriff.
Re-elect Deborah Berry Sun, 1 Jun 2008 06:20:21 -0500 JEAN SEELAND WATERLOO --- I am a resident and taxpayer in Iowa House District 22. I have been well represented the past several years by Rep. Deborah Berry. She is an ardent supporter of working men and women. Representative Berry is a strong advocate for quality education in Iowa. The Iowa State Education Association awards her a 100 percent voting record for education. She has fought for funding of after school programs, early childhood education, and promoting teacher quality. She cares and speaks for protection of those without a strong voice in our community; the children and the most in need. Ms. Berry listens to her constituents and responds to their concerns. She participates in Legislative Forums throughout our community. She is our voice in Des Moines and her voice is effective. June 3 is primary election day. I urge you to cast a ballot for Deborah Berry.
Mark Johnson for sherrif Sun, 1 Jun 2008 06:20:21 -0500 SCOTT C. ANDERSON BRANDON --- I would like to say that Black Hawk County is very lucky to have a professional law enforcement officer who is so committed to the community. Quality leadership and personal involvement with sincerity is a rare find and with Mark Johnson you get the entire package.
On illegal immigration Sun, 1 Jun 2008 06:20:21 -0500 On illegal immigration CHARLOTTE RADY CEDAR FALLS --- Come on, Mr. Leonard Thill (May 25), do you really believe that rounding up the bad "illegals" and either jailing them forever or sending them back home will stop more from coming here? Hon, open your eyes, take a look around. Until we enforce laws that seal our borders, until we cease to incarcerate the officers who enforce those laws, until we stop caving to the despicable criminals (Americans) who steal our Social Security numbers, give them to the illegals and then bring them into this country, you'll never see an end to illegal immigration.
On Grassley, energy prices Sun, 1 Jun 2008 06:20:21 -0500 FRITZ GROSZKRUGER DUMONT --- Alan Guebert is correct when he agrees with Sen. Charles Grassley that the anti-ethanol campaign is fake. He should know, because the pro-ethanol campaign is fake as well. The side that gets little press is the pro-freedom campaign.

Krutsinger for supervisor Sun, 1 Jun 2008 06:20:21 -0500 CINDY BLOW WATERLOO --- I am writing to remind the residents of Black Hawk County to vote in the upcoming primary. I am asking the voters to please join with me in supporting Dan Krutsinger for the position of county supervisor. With 31 years of work experience in county government, Dan certainly understands how our county government works and should work. After recently retiring as a captain with the Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office, Dan is now ready to continue his services to the taxpayers. He will be dedicated to devote his time and energies on a full-time basis to the position of a county supervisor. I have known Dan for over 20 years, and always found him to be professional at his job. He was always very approachable, honest and helpful whenever I talked to him on a business level. Black Hawk County needs a man like Dan Krutsinger, who is committed to working together with us for a better tomorrow.
Punishing the wrong people Sun, 1 Jun 2008 06:20:21 -0500 DIXIE BILLINGS WATERLOO --- This letter is in regards to a fence at on Byron Avenue. An elderly lady lives at this address and she hired someone to put up a fence to better the look of her property. She previously had a wood fence for years before she had the new one installed. Now the city has sent her a letter saying the fence is too high. The inspector could have at least had the decency to come to her home and visit with her about its height. Instead, they sent her a letter saying she had only 10 days to comply. This city has its priorities a little off. It seems like the more you try to fix up your property the more you get shut down. Code enforcement people need to go after those who have couches, refrigerators and old tires laying all over their yard. They should also be after people who are not mowing their yard. Leave the people alone who try to better their property.
John Miller for supervisor Sun, 1 Jun 2008 06:20:21 -0500 JIM PAPROCKI MARTHA PAPROCKI WATERLOO --- John Miller understands Iowa values and the needs of our county. He is a hard-working board supervisor who believes he can do his best by working together as a team member. John takes the time to listen to differing viewpoints. He is a good man who has the courage to make some hard choices that he believes are in the best interests of the people of our county. When we think of leadership, John Miller has the qualities of a strong leader. He repeatedly has demonstrated leadership during the past four years. We are very fortunate to have a man of John's character as a member of the board of supervisors. He is an asset to the board of supervisors and to our county. We ask you to support John Miller for Black Hawk County Supervisor in the Democratic Primary.
Who are the real thieves Sun, 1 Jun 2008 06:20:21 -0500 LARRY MC KINNEY CEDAR FALLS --- When the oil prices keep soaring and there is no end in sight, it is sad when people have to make a choice as to pay or steal. I totally agree that anyone who is stealing gas needs to be punished for driving off. There are morals and laws in this country that say it is wrong to steal. The people are asking when I get fuel, when is it going to stop? Think of the farmers, and the truckers who have to purchase diesel. People are making choices on whether to eat, get fuel or medicine. I feel for the elderly on fixed incomes who have to decide fuel, food or medicine?
No good choice Sun, 1 Jun 2008 06:20:21 -0500 FRED L. CRANE STOUT --- Soon it will be time to select a president to replace G. W. Bush. It cannot come fast enough to make many people happy. Before we celebrate, let us look at the choice that will be on the ballots. On one side we have McCain who in my opinion will be a carbon copy of Bush. No good. We need new leadership. On the other side we have probably Obama. That thought worries me as I do not think he has the ability to lead this country. That leaves me with one choice and that is to stay home on voting day. This is something that I have never done since I became old enough to vote. That came when I was in Germany in 1945. I cannot with any feelings for the betterment of this great country vote for either one. We all know what happens when we do not obey the law. We get arrested. Then why all the fuss about those illegals who were taken into custody as they broke the law. If you want to come to America the proper way and become citizens then do so but do it the right way. The price of gas has gone out of sight. These big oil companies are making record profits. Those holding stock in these companies are happy and I think our president and vice president are happy. Let's start here at home to correct things before we try to tell others how to live.
On why we're cynical Sun, 1 Jun 2008 06:20:21 -0500 ROGER W. SMITH WATERLOO --- Dear Rep. Bruce Braley: Many conservatives and libertarians are fond of describing themselves as "strict constructionists," meaning they believe the government should strictly enforce the U. S. Constitution as it reads. They believe that, for far too long, the Federal government has been either ignoring the constitutional limitations on its powers, or simply making things up as it goes to rationalize the unconstitutional use of governmental power.
Tony Thompson for sherrif Sun, 1 Jun 2008 06:20:21 -0500 LELAND POWERS WATERLOO --- Here we go again, election year and people bad mouthing other people. I just get sick of it. Every candidate needs to recognize that slander and mudslinging doesn't get them anywhere anymore --- the public doesn't like it or respect it. The other day, I had the opportunity to hear Tony Thompson who is running for Black Hawk County sheriff, speak. My ears perked up when he said, "You won't hear me bad mouth any of the candidates in this race, in fact, I encourage them to run their race. The time to run is when the incumbent is retiring, so I don't begrudge any of them from running, you'll not hear a foul thing from me about anyone." Well, I'll tell you, Tony Thompson, you definitely have my vote. I encourage everyone to check out his Web site www.thompsonforsheriff.net and if you agree with me, vote Tony Thompson for sheriff. If you have any questions you can e-mail him at tony@thompsonforsheriff.net.
