However, we learn from the Courier that the standards emphasize the always unmeasurable "critical thinking skills" while further reducing knowledge. We also learn that the standards come from some half-baked educational guru who can't seem to critically think well enough to keep his facts straight. More troubling are the educationists that follow his siren call and can't critically think well enough to see what's wrong with him. I guess education is the only endeavor that doesn't need knowledge. So, the educationist opt to follow the latest mush-headed pied-piper“the type of "expert" that crippled a generation of students with fuzzy math and whole language. |

| Smoking ban Mon, 12 May 2008 12:01:38 -0500 DAVID THOMAS WATERLOO --- Recently I wrote a letter to the editor in support of Iowa's new public smoking ban. A couple of other letter writers have questioned some of the statistics I used, so please allow me to cite some sources. According to the CDC in Atlanta between 1997 and 2001 an average of 438,000 a year died from smoking. JELiowa.org states that 53,000 people a year die from second-hand smoke. MADD claims that in 2006 17,602 people were killed by drunk drivers. According to drugwarfacts.org in 2000 435,000 died from smoking, all illegal drugs combined killed 17,000 and drunk driving killed 16,653. |
