| Equal pay actually exists Wed, 30 Apr 2008 12:23:19 -0500 JULIE PALADINO Science Lab Supervisor Science Center Wartburg College WAVERLY --- In response to Wednesday's paper where the headline "Study: Iowa women still making less that men" does not accurately express the article. As a woman coming of age in the 1970s when demonstrations for "equal work, equal pay" were often seen, this article actually states that this goal has been met, at least here in Iowa. It states, "Almost none of the disparity is because women earn less for the exact same jobs, Rachel Scott said. Instead, the difference arises because women are less likely to work full time and less likely to accumulate the experience needed to rise to executive-level pay." As a woman who has made choices regarding education, work, and motherhood, I surely understand it is ridiculous to compare my current paycheck to that of my husband's --- even though we both have the same undergraduate degree. But some studies seem to do just that. They add up the salaries of all men, then add up the salaries of all women, divide by the number of men/women surveyed and viola'--- the conclusion that "women still make less." Many people, men and women alike, choose various paths regarding education or work or full-time parenting. This freedom to choose is priceless, and that's what I thought the feminists of the 1970s were searching for. |
