| Power plant is hardly 'green' Mon, 28 Apr 2008 12:01:18 -0500 CHRIS SADLER WATERLOO --- I was surprised to see a full-page ad for Elk Run Energy's coal-fired power plant in the "Go Green" insert of the Courier on April 20. It is beyond me how burning 400 rail cars of dirty coal every week can be considered "going green." Their renewable energy claim is misleading. Originally this plant had no plans to use any renewable energy sources, now in an effort to "Go Green" their latest plan is to use a maximum of 10 percent biomass. Make no mistake, this still means they will burn at least 90 percent coal. They say they will establish new areas of crop production by reclaiming quarries with coal combustion by-products; these by-products will contain mercury among many other hazardous elements that could contaminate drinking water. They seem forget to mention the nearly 500 acres of prime farmland that the plant will take out of production. They plan to use a minimal amount of the acquired land to restore prairie and wetlands, by featuring planned recreational space and wetland restoration, as well as some continued crop production. The truth is this project will still be taking nearly 400 acres of prime farmland out of production forever. Remember, this is not a "green" plant. It is still a dirty coal-fired power plant that will endanger our environment as well as our health. |
