Don't ruin C.F. riverfront Thu, 24 Apr 2008 12:02:49 -0500 KEN PASCHKE CEDAR FALLS --- In Chicago there is Grant Park. In New York City, Central Park. The citizens of these great metropolises chose, early on, to preserve and protect those green spaces for future generations. In Cedar Falls our city is confronted with the opportunity to do the same or to allow the construction of what can be arguably called an eyesore. A seven story building blocking the view of the river and green spaces would do nothing for the city but plenty to it. This area, a marvelous gateway featuring public parks and museums, would be disfigured by a residential project of outrageous dimension and dubious value.
Vote for Dennis Kubik Thu, 24 Apr 2008 12:02:49 -0500 JOHN MYERS Retired Captain Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office EVANSDALE --- As a retired captain from the Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office I would like to encourage voters to vote for Dennis Kubik in the upcoming election. Working 32 years for the Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office has given me a working knowledge of its operations. Sheriff Kubik and his staff, past and present, have accomplished a great number of things during his tenure as sheriff. Job well done. However, a time comes when an outside perspective is need. Someone who can bring a wealth of knowledge to the office of sheriff. I believe that Dennis Kubik can and will bring a fresh new perspective to the office. Sometimes candidates can be caught up in the local politics and lose site of what they are running for office for and that is to serve the citizens of Black Hawk County to the best of their ability. I have worked with all the candidates over the years and in the case of three of them, being their supervisor.
Time to hike truck fees Thu, 24 Apr 2008 12:02:49 -0500 Time to hike truck fees LARRY WYCKOFF WATERLOO --- Thankfully, this morning I read that the pick-up truck license "increase" bill is still alive. (Gov. Chet Culver signed the bill Tuesday.) Four years ago, I wrote an editorial detailing (sorry my friends with pick-ups) that if the 800,000 trucks went from paying an average of $53 per year to $300, we'd increase the state income by $197 million. Now let's see, with all the potholes that have been documented, that would have provided an additional $800 million in the last four years, to take care of them and new road projects. The Legislature didn't "grandfather in" the $1 cigarette tax increase, and we certainly don't need to do that on the purchase of a $30,000-plus pick-up.

A ruinous administration Thu, 24 Apr 2008 12:02:49 -0500 LEE K. PLAEHN CEDAR FALLS --- Look at the devastation that Dick Cheney and his band of neo-cons have left us since they stole the 2000 election. A war, based only on lies, never defined in any way, growing into a maze that has no exit. Their way of handling this is to pour more money, armaments, troops and security forces into this rat hole. Let's forget about the Iraqi and the growing insurgency and concentrate more on corruption, greed, graft and exploitation.
