Accountability required Mon, 21 Apr 2008 12:06:57 CDT DON APLING WATERLOO --- Once upon a time in Waterloo trash day was twice a week and the man ran up to the house, took the can down to the truck, dumped it out, didn't bash the sides of the can in and brought the can back up to the house. Once upon a time the street sweepers ran three shifts a day in the spring to clean up the sand and dirt from winter so it didn't all end up down in the storm sewers. Once upon a time the dollar you earned was just as hard to get as it is today but it seems you got a lot more for it then you do today. In the old days almost everyone took pride in how the city looked as far as I can remember. From what I've been told by those who can remember a lot further back then I can; when you called city hall to got something done or if you needed something it was taken care of by that one phone call. Twenty years ago I ran a clean-up crew of from 12 to 30 people in the UNI Dome and during that time they were awarded for having the cleanest sports arena in the state more then one time. And the best people I had working for me were the older ones and if they read this they know who they are. They also knew if I had to tell them to do the job they were hired for more then once they were fired and I did it myself. My point is: Being in charge is not all it's cracked up to be and also you only get away with hanging your head and saying you were not aware of the problem so many times before someone reaches out and jerks your chain. You know who you are.
Heaven, earth paved with gold? Mon, 21 Apr 2008 12:06:57 CDT DORIS THOMPSON ROWLEY --- It seems when George W. Bush met the Pope, he asked, "Is it true that the streets are paved with gold in Heaven?"
Tax money used responsibly Mon, 21 Apr 2008 12:06:57 CDT ROGER WHITE CEDAR FALLS --- Recently the rural residents of Black Hawk County voted to divert 50 percent of their local option sales tax money from property tax relief to help pay for critical rural bridge and road repairs. Rural road and bridge repairs had been neglected while the Republicans controlled the board of supervisors. Wouldn't it have been an arrogant slap in the face to these rural residents if the supervisors had wasted $166,000 of their funds by overpaying for the 2008 road contracts? The majority of the board accepted the lowest bid as they approved contracts for road projects. The $166,000 saved ensures that the majority of the board of supervisors are using tax dollars responsibly and getting the most road and bridge work for the money. The rural residents of the county should be extremely grateful. I know I am.
Room needed for graffiti art Mon, 21 Apr 2008 12:06:57 CDT AARON PAQUETTE CEDAR FALLS --- I am a 17-year-old Cedar Falls resident and a local graffiti writer. My name is aeos1 and go ahead report me, it wouldn't help because I am a legal graffiti writer. That's right, I said legal. Now I was wondering if the people of Cedar Falls could tell me what graffiti is to them? I want to know why it's hated so much around the community. I wish people could see through my eyes for one day and see what I see. If they could take the time to realize what detail goes into it and what a huge part of the world's culture it is, then maybe they would appreciate it more. What I'm trying to say is a lot of graffiti artists in this town are forced to keep their talents a secret and I want them to have a place to paint. My story is like anyone elses. I was a young kid wanting to get noticed so I turned to graffiti. It kept me from drugs and violence. Sure it got me arrested once and almost another time but I learned and I didn't do anything else.
